With so many towns near the ocean and a coastline with numerous protected harbors and bays, it’s no surprise that boating is one of the most popular outdoor activities on Boston’s South Shore.

Dockwa is a great online resource for finding and reserving dockage and moorings at Massachusetts marinas. You'll find listings and information for municipal docks, public marinas, private marinas, boatyards, and yacht clubs.

Another helpful resource to located South Shore boating access is the interactive map provided by the Mass.gov's Office of Fishing and Boating Access.

 

Local Tip: Prime time for boating season in Massachusetts takes place between Memorial Day weekend and the end of September.

South Shore Cross Country Skiing

 

No need to drive north in the winter to enjoy cross country skiing under a crystalline blue sky. South Shore state parks and forests offer cross country skiing on trails that wind through forests and snow-covered meadows.

The South Shore is studded with ponds and lakes that are stocked with trout. There’s also the Atlantic coastline with plenty of places to go fishing from the shoreline or on the water.

South Shore Golfing

 

The Greater Boston area is a golfer’s paradise. That includes the South Shore, where golfers can choose from public and private courses for a perfect day on the fairways.

Public golf courses on the South Shore include Southers Marsh Golf Club in Plymouth, Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, the 70-year-old Ponkapoag Golf Course in Canton, and the South Shore Country Club in Hingham.

Private golf courses on the South Shore include some of the top courses in Massachusetts.

  • Boston Golf Club, Hingham. Designed by Gil Hanse, every hole is carefully contoured to match the natural flow of the terrain.
  • Old Sandwich Golf Club, Plymouth. Opened in 2004, this private club quickly became one of the Bay State’s premier private golf courses. Surrounded by deep woods, meadows, wetlands, and cranberry bogs.

 

Local Tip: Plymouth may well be the golf Mecca of the South Shore. America's Hometown boasts no fewer than nine golf courses, including private and municipal courses.

South Shore Hiking

 

Hikers and walkers can choose from a wide selection of conservation areas, wildlife sanctuaries, and beaches spread throughout Boston's South Shore. Four Mass Audubon properties to explore are:

  • North Hill Marsh Sanctuary, Duxbury A 90-acre pond surrounded by a thousand acres of green space features a 5-mile trail system that circles the pond and extends into Knapp Town Forest, which is owned by the Town of Duxbury.
  • Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary, Marshfield Three miles of trails and boardwalks crisscross meadows, woodlands, and wetlands at this 578-acre preserve.
  • North River Wildlife Sanctuary, Marshfield Two miles of trails includes a unversally-accessible loop. Trails wind through fields, salt marshes, and along the North River.
  • Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Plymouth A former cranberry farm, this 481-acre property features streams, ponds, woodlands, and three miles of trails.
