Cape Cod makes up for its small geographic size by supporting well over 90,000 households on its modest 1,300 square miles of land. Depending on market conditions, that can add up to a lot of real estate to consider when you're deciding where to buy on Cape Cod.

Two important factors to consider are community services and amenities. You'll want to choose a home in a town that offers services and amenities that best suit your lifestyle.

If You Want Robust Town Programs

Generally the larger the community you choose to buy in on Cape Cod, the more residential programs, services, and amenities you'll find. And by "larger," we mean population. That brings us to the Town of Barnstable, which ranks as the most populous community on Cape Cod.

To provide services to its 44,000+ residents, the Town of Barnstable maintains an extensive Community Services department with divisions that include recreational services, senior and youth services, veterans services, and more.

The Town of Barnstable offers a similar level of community amenities. You'll find golf courses, parks, entertainnment venues, and an array of restaurants and shops. Barnstable is also home to Cape Cod Community College and Cape Cod YMCA which both offer a variety of community programs throughout the year.

Local Tip: Barnstable includes the seven villages of Hyannis, Centerville, Osterville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, West Barnstable, and Barnstable Village. Keep in mind that Barnstable real estate listings are organized by village.

Falmouth sits on the southwestern tip of Cape Cod and is the second largest in population. This vibrant Upper Cape town offers such amenities as outdoor concerts and movies, arts and crafts shows, and abundant shopping and dinning options. The community is home to the Falmouth Artists Guild, historic Highfield Hall and Gardens, and the 10-mile Shining Sea Bikeway.

Yarmouth, in the Mid-Cape area, offers extensive recreational opportunities, outlet shopping, and plenty of dining and boutique shopping choices.

If You Have Sports-Minded Kids

The location of Cape Cod YMCA in the village of West Barnstable makes this an attractive area for families with children who are sports-minded. Cape Cod YMCA offers youth soccer leagues, T-ball, karate, speed and agility training, swimming, and more. Depending on the sport, programs are available year around. Summer camps programs are also available.

Familes with children interested in boating, swimming, and fishing might consider Mashpee, located in the Upper Cape. Mashpee is also a prime location for golfers with 20 golf courses within a 15-minute drive.

Local Tip: Hyannis is where ferries leave for Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

If You Want STEM Resources

There's good news for parents seeking STEM opportunities for school-aged children on Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Regional STEM Network brings together educators, school districts, business and industry partners, and community members in promoting STEM opportunities in area schools and businesses.

In just four years, the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network has partnered with over 65 organizations who have shared STEM experiences with the Cape Cod community. The networks serves all Cape Cod school districts.

If You're a Senior Citizen

No matter what retirement looks like for you, Cape Cod Communities can provide a variety of lifestyles to suit you.

Brewster in the Lower Cape features over 30 art galleries and is along a 22-mile bike trail.

Chatham has nine beaches, two of which are reserved for residents only. There's a 9-hole golf course, plenty of recreational opportunities, and biking is popular. This Lower Cape community is a popular with retirees and offers some spectacular views of Chatham Bay.

If fine dining is an important part of your retirement plans, Dennis is a solid option. The community is also home to the Cape Cod Playhouse, Cape Museum of Fine Arts, and what some consider the finest golf course on the Cape, the Dennis Pines Golf Course.

Local Tip: Got teens? Cape Cod Mall in Hyannis is the only indoor shopping center on Cape Cod. Inside in the largest multiplex movie theater on the Cape, Regal Cape Cod Mall Stadium 12.

If You Want to Volunteer

Opportunities abound on Cape Cod for those willing to volunteer. Cape Cod Volunteers serves as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities on the Cape, ranging from food pantries to homeless prevention.

Volunteers are often sought for local community events, gardening projects, and working with animal shelters. Cape Cod Volunteers makes just about any Cape Cod town a good place to volunteer.
