Barnstable, Massachusetts

Located midway up the "bicep" of the Cape, the Town of Barnstable consists of seven villages: Hyannis, Centerville, Cotuit, Marston Mills, Osterville, Barnstable Village, and West Barnstable. Each village has its own unique characteristics and charm, making Barnstable the Cape's most diverse setting. From historical sites to entertainment, beaches to breweries (Cape Cod Beer is located in Hyannis), Barnstable is a microcosm of Cape living. 

Barnstable has several beautiful beaches, from long, wide swaths of sand with seasonal lifeguards and chair rentals to quiet coves that are ideal for fishing. Popular spots include Covell Beach, Craigville Beach, Dowses Beach, Loop Beach, and Kamlus. Bordered by water on three sides, Cotuit is a poplar destination for boating and kayaking. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is also easily accessible; the paved bikeway runs 25-miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet. 

In 2014, the Washington Post rated Sturgis Charter Public School the number-one school in Massachusetts. It’s located in Hyannis and consists of two campuses of about 400 students each.  

Barnstable is Cape Cod's main transportation hub. The town is served by two major highways: U.S. Route 6 and Massachusetts Route 28. Route 6A, Route 132, and Route 149 are also located in town. The Barnstable Municipal Airport provides regional service between the Cape and Islands, and Hyannis Harbor is the site of the main ferry lines. The closest MBTA commuter rail stations are the Kingston/Route 3 and Middleborough/Lakeville stations.
